  • Duties described below are at the highest grade advertised. Duties assigned at lower grade levels will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity; duties will be commensurate with the grade of selected employee.
  • Accomplishes assembly, construction, installation, fabrication, maintenance, operation, repairs, and modification of research apparatus and test facilities.
  • Performs critical facility/equipment inspections, initiating necessary repairs to facility/test article. Provides technical support necessary to insure the operational capability of assigned facilities and their experimental systems and subsystems.
  • Performs work of a broad scope in the design, buildup, adaptation, and modification of mechanical/electrical systems or component parts, which are part of complex experimental research tests.
  • Adheres to existing operational procedures, configuration mandates and Langley Research Center (LaRC) standards of facility operation and operation of experimental devices.
  • Operates high-energy, complex research facilities to execute fundamental flow physics studies, aerodynamic performance measurements and aeroheating assessment of advanced vehicle systems.
  • Diagnoses problems with the test facilities and test articles. Adheres to existing operational procedures, modifying and developing special procedures as required.
  • Maintains the facility Configuration Management Program documentation making drawing changes, procedure changes, facility resume changes, etc. Adheres to existing LaRC Safety Standards and Regulations in the performance of assigned duties.
  • Aides in determining test procedures, evaluating test results and making necessary design adjustments.

QualificationsSpecialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.To qualify for GS-11, you must have:
a) One year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level:

  • Providing technical support for the equipment associated with aerospace research test facilities;
  • Reviewing engineering or production drawings, specifications, or test reports; and
  • Assisting with the resolution of equipment maintenance issues or equipment modification requests.

OR
b) Completed all requirements for a doctoral degree (i.e., Ph.D. or equivalent) in an appropriate field
OR
c) Completed 3 full academic years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or equivalent doctoral degree in an appropriate field
OR
d) LL.M., if related
OR
e) Have an equivalent combination of experience and graduate study as discussed in a), b), c) and d) aboveTo qualify for GS-12, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level:

  • Performing maintenance related duties on systems associated with aerospace research test facilities;
  • Advising on parts, tools, or components and standard operating procedures; and
  • Investigating equipment deficiencies and determining appropriate issue resolution.

To qualify for GS-13, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level:

  • Modifying and maintaining integrated systems associated with aerospace research test facilities (such as high-pressure air and gas systems, vacuum, electromechanical interlock systems, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical controls, and instrumentation);
  • Leading technical support necessary to ensure the operational capability of assigned facilities; follows operational procedures, configuration mandates and standards of facility operation and operation of experimental devices; and
  • Providing technical support to Directorate and Branch projects and facilities to include input to test and model systems controls integration, aides in determining test procedures, evaluating test results, and making necessary design adjustments.
