Job description: IT Data Engineering is responsible for designing and developing enterprise data collection, aggregation, and access systems for IDEXX’s global business environment. We work with traditional data architectures such as enterprise data warehousing and larger cloud-based data centralization systems like data integration hubs. Our products are used to synchronize billions of data points between enterprise applications such as global ERP and CRM applications, collect and normalize reference lab results and clinical utilization, and create easy-to-access data sources for enterprise analytics, sales enablement tools, and data science initiatives.As a Senior Data Architect for our Results Data Exchange product within IT Data Engineering, you will drive the vision and create the architecture for data solutions, ensuring access, performance, and security of data systems and applications, aligning data architecture with overall enterprise architecture, and maintaining extensive knowledge of databases and their relation to business operations. You will translate strategic requirements into a usable enterprise data framework and guide data solutions development while facilitating consistent data design, optimization, archiving, and recovery strategy.Our team includes a range of data engineers, data architects, and data-centric business system analysts, focusing heavily on cloud-based “big data” projects. Some team members provide knowledge and support over our traditional data warehouse applications, building upon these environments with SQL and traditional ETL methods. At the same time, our newest technology expands our data models via Snowflake, bringing the best of cloud scale and compute capabilities and long-lived data engineering practices.Our stack: AWS (S3, EMR, Glue, DocumentDB, DynamoDB, OpenSearch), Snowflake, Oracle, MySQL, Python, Scala, Terraform, gitIn this role:
- You will develop and maintain the overall system’s technical architecture
- You will collaborate with technology and management teams to understand structural requirements and define standards for storing, consuming, integrating, and managing data across the organization and translating it into a usable blueprint
- You will build an inventory of data needed to implement the architecture and create a vision for how data will flow through the organization
- You will design and build complex data models and approve modifications to and implement systems
- You will implement measures to ensure data accuracy and accessibility, constantly monitoring and refining the performance of data management systems.
- You will produce and enforce database development standards
- You will provide architectural design and planning of technical activities, including application architecture, system landscape, installation sizing and planning, system change management, performance monitoring, performance tuning, troubleshooting, problem analysis, and problem resolution
- You will ensure interoperability at the data level across a full range of relevant Company products and services
- You will ensure data integrity and the data’s strategic value is understood and practiced throughout the Company
- You will mentor other development and business teams on data architecture design and requirements
- You will manage incoming technical requests and design systems for optimum performance; proactively identify potential problems; create and modify strategies to resolve problems; document issues and resolutions
- You will maintain descriptions of data, structures, and metadata
What you will need to succeed:
- You have experience as Data Engineer, ETL developer, or report metadata designer
- You can build distributed and cloud-based data pipeline architectures
- Your tech stack includes Hadoop-based technologies like MapReduce, Spark, and Hive, Jenkins and Terraform, SQL-based technologies like Oracle, PostgreSQL, and MySQL, NoSQL technologies like Cassandra and MongoDB and of course Python
- You are familiar with industry-standard entity relationship modeling software
- You are good at analyzing and solving problems
- You are an excellent communicator, both in writing and verbally
- You are driven and take the initiative
- You have skills in:
- Data and information modeling for relational, semi, and non-structured datasets
- General DevOps, such as building infrastructure and CI/CD pipelines
- Development management
- You have a solid understanding of:
- Data warehousing solutions
- Data distribution service models and methods, including API-based publish and subscribe architectures
- Software development lifecycle, including internal enterprise projects and commercialized software products
- You know how to:
- Understand business requirements and translate them into conceptual, logical, and physical models
- Articulate and define architectural patterns for data pipelines and ecosystems resilient to growth and change
- Use SQL to examine data and load or modify data in relational tables
- Use Python or equivalent high-level language to review, load, or modify data in relational tables
- Create reusable scripts to implement, load, and test physical models
- Multi-task, prioritize, and meet deadlines
