Term appointments are non-status, nonpermanent appointments of limited duration (more than one (1) year but not more than four (4)), depending on funding. The appointment to a Term position does not confer eligibility for promotion ore reassignment to other positions or the ability to be non-competitively converted to permanent employment.These duties include, but are not limited to:
Fabricates/ Constructs Dentures:
- Fabricates removable complete and partial dentures, or combinations thereof. Boxes impressions and pours casts.
- Constructs custom trays, registration bases, and occlusion rims.
- Mounts casts on indicated articulator.
- Selects and sets up artificial teeth. Waxes, flasks, and boils out dentures.
- Mixes, packs acrylic, and utilizes the Heat Injection technique to fabricate dentures, as required.
- Finishes and polishes dentures.
- Fabricates acrylic removable partial dentures.
- Surveys master cast to implement the dentist’s design for removable partial dentures.
- Blocks out undercuts and duplicates master casts.
Prepares/Fabricates Crown and Bridge Casework:
- Pours impressions to produce accurate removable dies.
- Checks and boxes the impression; mixing and pouring the material from which the die is to be made; and processing the poured impression using the materials and sequence of techniques appropriate to the type of die being constructed.
- Checks completed dies for exact reproduction of the tooth to be restored, and for the exact reproduction of the relationship to surrounding and occluding teeth.
- Fabricates casts and mounts casts on articulators.
- Prepares impressions, models, occlusal registrations, and implant procedure. components to be mailed to contracting Dental Laboratories.
Fabricates/Constructs Special Dental Appliances:
- Fabricates soft maxillary /mandibular occlusal guards and fluoride carrier trays.
- Waxes up missing teeth and constructs stents for fixed prosthetic procedures.
- Fabricates acrylic guides for dental implants.
- Processes impressions and records to be sent to contracting lab for Obstructive Sleep Apnea Appliances.
Processes Prescriptions & Maintains Supplies & Equipment Inventory:
- Receives, interprets, and processes prescriptions.
- Controls shipments, interprets the dentist’s prescription for full and partial dentures including cases involving abnormalities and conditions that present problems in retaining the denture or improving or restoring mastication or other mouth functions.
- Studies the dentist’s prescription, surveys, and interprets designs for partial dentures.
- Interprets and processes the prescription for crown and bridge case work.
Work Schedule: Monday – Friday; 7:30am – 4:00pm

QualificationsENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position.
Specialized Experience GS-7: Having one (1) year of Specialized Experience that equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA’s) to perform successfully the duties of Dental Laboratory Technician, and that is typically in or related to the position. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least GS-6 grade level. Examples of Specialized experience are: Use of dental laboratory material such as impression materials, plasters, stones, hydrocolloids, waxes, metals, acrylics, porcelain, and similar materials; use of dental laboratory material such as impression materials, plasters, stones, hydrocolloids, waxes, metals, acrylics, porcelain, and similar materials; use of laboratory equipment such as hand tools, dental lathes, engines, and hand pieces, furnaces, casting machines, presses, flasks, and related equipment; use of precision instruments such as articulators, surveyors, and micro-analyzers; and construction of dental prosthetic appliances. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Education: Have successfully completed one (1) full year of graduate level education. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. Graduate education must be directly related to the position to be creditable. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED)

Combining Education and Experience: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate education and specialized experience may be used to meet total experience requirements. Graduate education must be directly related to the position to be creditable. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.
