We strive to identify and mitigate the potential risks associated with AI development and deployment, ensuring that these technologies never compromise the principles of fair housing. Simultaneously, we champion the advancement of AI innovations that actively promote equitable access, opportunity, and outcomes for all, thereby contributing to a housing system free from discrimination and segregation. We are looking for a Director of AI Governance to join the innovative, startup-like Research unit of our Responsible AI team and help advance our mission.The Director of AI Governance at NFHA will lead the development and implementation of strategic and operational aspects of AI governance within the organization’s projects. Reporting to the Chief AI Officer, the incumbent will play a pivotal role in ensuring that AI technologies and initiatives within the housing and financial sectors are innovative, equitable, and compliant with civil and human rights laws. The role focuses on advocacy, research, and education, aiming to balance AI innovation with regulation to protect vulnerable communities and uphold NFHA’s mission to eliminate housing discrimination and promote inclusive, well-resourced communities.

Responsibilities Overview

  • Lead the development and execution of NFHA’s AI governance strategies, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and compliance with relevant legal and ethical standards.
  • Oversee the implementation of responsible AI principles across NFHA’s projects, and partnerships, with a focus on the housing and financial sectors.
  • Collaborate with the Chief AI Officer to integrate AI governance frameworks into NFHA’s broader advocacy, research, and policy initiatives.

Advocacy

  • Advocate for fair and ethical AI practices in housing and financial services, engaging with policymakers, regulators, industry leaders, and NFHA’s members to influence AI-related legislation and standards.
  • Lead the development and dissemination of policy briefs, position papers, and public comments on AI governance issues, focusing on eliminating bias and promoting fairness in AI systems.
  • Represent NFHA in national and international forums, working groups, and conferences to advance NFHA’s mission as well as responsible AI practices in the public and private sectors.

Research

  • Lead and coordinate high-quality research initiatives that explore the impact of AI on housing and financial services, particularly concerning discrimination, segregation, bias, and inequity and their effects.
  • Analyze emerging AI technologies and their implications for civil rights, contributing to NFHA’s thought leadership in responsible AI.
  • Lead the development of metrics and methodologies to assess the effectiveness of AI governance frameworks and interventions in the housing and financial sectors.
  • Help lead the development, publication, and promotion of NFHA’s responsible AI research.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including NFHA members, government agencies, private sector partners, advocacy groups, and academic institutions.
  • Facilitate cross-sector collaborations to advance responsible AI development and usage, ensuring that stakeholder perspectives are integrated into NFHA’s AI governance strategies and that NFHA’s responsible AI principles are incorporated into stakeholder’s perspectives and strategies.
  • Provide expert advice and guidance to NFHA’s leadership and partners on AI governance issues, aligning stakeholder efforts with NFHA’s mission and values.
  • Work with internal stakeholders to increase cross-functional collaboration and facilitate organizational cohesion regarding NFHA’s responsible AI principles and work.

Conference and Event Support

  • Assist in organizing and participating in conferences, workshops, and seminars to promote awareness and understanding of AI governance challenges and opportunities within the housing and financial sectors.
  • Present NFHA’s research findings, policy positions, and best practices at events hosted by NFHA member organizations, government agencies, coalition partners, and industry fostering dialogue on responsible AI implementation.
  • Lead the development of educational materials and resources on AI governance for diverse audiences, including policymakers, industry professionals, and community groups.

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience Required
Education: Advanced degree (Master’s or Ph.D.) in social sciences with quantitative background or in a data science field with policy background. A bachelor’s degree with equivalent years of experience may be considered.Experience: Minimum of 7 years of experience in AI governance, technology policy, civil rights law, research, or a related field, with at least 3 years in a leadership or managerial role. A bachelor’s degree requires minimum of 10 years of experience in addition to 5 years in a leadership or managerial role.Comprehensive Knowledge:

  • AI ethics, governance frameworks, and compliance requirements, particularly within the context of civil rights and anti-discrimination laws.
  • Federal and state regulations governing AI and data privacy, including the Fair Housing Act, Equal Credit Opportunity Act, and relevant international laws.
  • Best practices in bias mitigation, fairness assessment, and transparency in AI systems.
  • Quantitative and qualitative research and analytic methodologies as well as standards and protocols for producing and publishing high-quality research.

Skills:

  • Deep understanding of AI technologies and their ethical, legal, and societal implications, particularly in housing and financial services.
  • Strong analytical and research skills, with the ability to synthesize complex information and develop actionable insights.
  • Excellent communication and advocacy skills, capable of influencing policy and industry practices.
  • Superior writing skills and ability to prepare written materials and convey technical, complex information about concepts, products, and research results to diverse audiences.
  • Proven track record of managing cross-functional teams and leading complex projects.

The salary range for this role is between $130,000 – $160,000. Salary is commensurate with experience.NFHA offers:
